Joist alternative for irrigation contractors
Facts checked 2026-10-19
Short answer: stay on Joist if what you need is quotes, invoices and payments from your phone; at $10 to $32 per month for most of its plans it is hard to beat on price. Look at an alternative when the pain is no longer paperwork but the schedule: too many calls, no way to stop a window being overbooked, and nowhere to keep each property's controllers, zones and backflow tests.
Signs Joist is still the right tool
- You are one person or a crew of two, and your day is planned in your head or on a calendar.
- Getting paid is the bottleneck: deposits, milestone payments, Tap to Pay, financing.
- You need QuickBooks sync, which Joist lists from the Pro plan.
- You work in several trades and want one estimate and invoice tool for all of them.
Signs you have outgrown it
- Overbooked days. Joist lists visit scheduling only on Run ($100 per month at list, $70 at the 30% introductory price shown on 2026-10-19), and says elsewhere it does not include dispatching. If customers pick times and you need a hard limit per window, see how to stop overbooking arrival windows.
- More than one technician in the field. Joist's site positions the product as free of dispatching and employee tracking. If you need to assign a crew and a crew lead to a job, that is the gap.
- Backflow and certification paperwork. Joist's pages describe no backflow test records or tester certification tracking. See how to track backflow test due dates for the manual version first.
- System history. The controller, zone and component record per property, and warranty on each, is not something Joist's pages describe.
What switching to Sprinklerly gets you, and costs you
You get geofenced service-area days with arrival windows and capacity, multi-technician crew assignment, route planning with drive times, a property and irrigation-asset tree, backflow tester certification and test reports, price-book estimates and contractor insurance documents as generated PDFs. You give up Joist's native mobile apps, QuickBooks sync (Sprinklerly writes import files only), Tap to Pay, expense tracking and its extras. Customers can be brought across with a CSV import with saved column mappings; estimates and invoices already sent in Joist stay in Joist.
Sprinklerly is free during early access for contractors who sign up by December 31, 2026, with no credit card required. Planned prices at general availability are $79, $149 and $249 per month, higher than Joist's listed $10 to $70, because it covers scheduling and records rather than quoting alone. Many shops run both.
